Home tour series | Episode 5
Ruben Hughes
Art director and photographer Ruben Hughes has lived in Denmark for eight years, though his story begins in New York. His home is a reflection of that journey — a place filled with objects chosen for their stories, their craftsmanship, and the feeling they bring to his everyday life.
As someone who captures moments and creates imagery that outlives the instant, do you see your craft as something you would like to pass on to your child?
My father was an accomplished creative. I remember spending hours learning from him as a child. I cherish those moments now, but I feel that I didn’t truly appreciate them until I was older and more developed, with a clearer understanding of what I wanted in my life. So, I plan to show my future child the craft of photography, but from a lens of curiosity and creativity — allowing them to take what they want from the experience.
Do you also feel a connection to the idea of legacy in your home: furniture or objects that carry stories and stay in the family?
All of my furniture and objects tell a story. I like to think of them as chapters in my life, all connected by the binding of my home. I would like everything to stay within the family and have my grandchildren one day share the same stories I tell today.
How do you choose pieces that outlast trends and become part of your long-term living environment?
I look for pieces that already have a legacy and a story. It quickly tells me that they can stand the test of time and outlast the many trends of the moment.
Can you share a moment or ritual in your home that feels meaningful to you — one that the right design piece enhances?
My Monday through Friday is quite screen-heavy, from reviewing images to countless emails. On the weekend, I like to go analog and flip through the library of books I have stacked around the house to find new inspiration. I might start in my home office, then move to a lounge chair, and end on the sofa. The right design piece must be comfortable to enhance these moments.
What do you like the most about the Series 270 F Armchair and the Wire portable lamp?
The Series 270 F Armchair feels like an object of art and furniture. The Wire portable lamp is quite iconic but also animated in its design. Both are good examples of pieces with a legacy and a story. In this next chapter of my life, I look forward to having my own story written with them.
